Home Win for Burton

Claire Bradley24 Sep 2017 - 11:42

Burton welcomed newly promoted Camp Hill to Peel Croft this weekend.

Although they have been in the division below for the last few seasons there is a long history of the clubs competing against each other so the match was eagerly anticipated.

As usual Burton were out of the blocks quickly. From the kick off they retrieved the ball and passed it quickly along the back line for full back Leroy Bitterhout to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.

From the restart the home team got straight into action again and after a driving run by the forwards the ball was passed to winger Harris Mountford who drew his man and passed to the speedy Bitterhout for his second try. The conversion was again missed.

Burton were rampant at this point and there seemed little the visitors could do to stifle the Burton attack. Everyone wanted to get in on the action and scrum half Chaz Bunting made a great break and found Joe Gazzard in support, to crash over the line for the third try of the afternoon. This time Bunting added the extra points.

There then followed a period of pressure by the visitors but although the backs and forwards alike hammered at the Burton defence they were unable to penetrate it. They did force a penalty, however, which the kicker duly slotted over to make the score 17-3.

Burton attacked again from the restart and eventually the visitors trying to clear the ball conceded a lineout close to their own line. The visitors were penalised for pulling down the ensuing maul but Burton kicked the ball into touch for another lineout. The forwards set up the maul again and this time they drove to the line with number eight Dominic “Spud” Taylor getting the touchdown. The conversion was again missed but once again Burton had secured the try bonus point before half time. The score at the interval was 22-3.

The second half was a fairly scrappy affair with mistakes being made on both sides but Burton were still able to score four more tries before the end of the match. The first of these was scored by debutant winger Harris Mountford following another blistering run by Bitterhout. Then Bunting picked the ball up from a scrum virtually on half way and made a weaving run to score under the posts. He converted his own try.

The third try of the half came when after the backs moved the ball well, the mobile prop James Davies took the ball from the ruck and ran up the empty blind side to score in the corner. The final try of the afternoon was scored by Nick Oxley. After more good passing by the Burton backs Oxley was on the end of the line to score in the corner, so he has scored in every match so far this season.

The final score was 44-3. Burton will be delighted that they prevented the visitors from crossing the try line but will be worried at the missed conversions which may prove crucial in closer games.
