They started really well and drove into the Bromsgrove 22 where they recycled the ball and found winger Dewi Williams running on an excellent angle to take the ball in the centre and score under the posts. Chaz Bunting converted.
From the restart the Burton forwards worked their way back into Bromsgrove territory where captain Jack Neal made a good run before off loading to Joe Gazzard who ran through the defence for the second try of the match. Bunting again added the extra points so the visitors were 14 points up inside of 10 minutes.
The Worcestershire side were playing at level 5 last year and although relegated at the end of the season they now began to show the quality which had kept them at level 5 for several seasons. Without doing anything flamboyant they carried the ball into the visitors half and showed great patience to keep recycling the ball with backs and forwards alike pounding at the Burton defence. It is fair to say that Burton had the edge in the scrums, but there were very few as the home team did not make many mistakes.
Something had to give and centre Jack Brooks was sent to the sin bin for tackling a player without the ball. The home team kicker slotted the ball over to get his side on the score sheet. From the restart the home team again got hold of the ball and worked their way into the visitors half. With Burton being a man short in defence the home team through some slick handling were able to score in the corner. The conversion was missed. With there being no more significant action in the half, Burton found themselves at half time hanging on to a slender lead at 13-14.
From the restart Bromsgrove gained possession and some poor tackling by Burton allowed them to score under the posts. The extra points were added taking the home team into the lead for the first time in the match at 20-14.
Burton now showed how far they have come as a team over the past few seasons and refused to capitulate. After some strong running by the forwards, full back Nick Oxley joined the back line to race past his opposite number and score for the second week running. Bunting added the extra points so the visitors regained the lead. A few minutes later Burton further increased their lead when Dewi Williams gathered a kick ahead to score his second try of the afternoon.
From the restart the home team easily regained the ball when their speedy winger jumped into the air to snatch it away from the Burton receivers. They again moved towards the Burton line. More poor tackling by the Burton backs allowed the home team winger to score in the corner. The conversion was missed but Bromsgrove were in the lead again at 28-26.
When the home team missed a drop goal attempt which would have taken them further into the lead, this seemed to spur Burton into action following the drop out the forwards got hold of the ball and with some fine offloading got into the opposition 22 where they passed the ball to debutant winger Leroy Bitterhout who showed a good turn of speed to dive in at the corner.
With Burton back in the lead again they tried to keep the home team pinned in their own half but a poor kick allowed them to get the ball again. With time up the visiting spectators were praying for the ball to go out of play and end the game. No mistakes came, however, and although this time Burton tackled resolutely they could not prevent the home team scoring the final try to win the game.
Burton will be disappointed to lose a game that they could have won but at least they got 2 bonus points, which might prove invaluable later in the season. They drop to fourth place in Midlands 1 West.
