Third Place League Finish for Burton

Third Place League Finish for Burton

Claire Bradley23 Apr 2017 - 11:47

Burton entertained Wolverhampton for the final league game of the season on Saturday.

From the kick off the home team immediately made clear their intention to run the ball. They moved it swiftly along the back line for winger Malcolm Theo to open the scoring in the second minute of the game. The conversion was missed.

Burton made a mess of the restart allowing the visitors to get hold of the ball for the first time. The visitors spent the next fifteen or so minutes hammering at the Burton line. During this period they were awarded three kickable penalties but chose to take quick taps on all three occasions instead of going for goal. Had they got themselves into the game at this point the outcome may have been different.

Burton’s defence was strong, however and they were eventually able to clear the ball. From a lineout in their own half they won the ball and after a good run by Lewis Sturgess the ball was recycled quickly and passed along the backs to fullback Nick Oxley joining the line at pace to score under the posts. Harry Titley added the extra points.

Burton were playing well at this point and although they made one or two handling errors, the forwards were either winning the scrums or putting enough pressure on the Wolverhampton scrum to deny them any good ball. The visitors were always on the back foot.

Burton scored three more tries before half time. First Oxley kicked ahead gathered his own kick and passed to Lewis Brooks to score in the corner. Then Darryl Banton, in his final 1st XV game, sold a dummy to the visitors’ centre drew the full back and passed to Oxley for his second try. And finally Kelvin Browne made a break and found Ricky Whitehall in support to score under the posts. Titley converted two of the tries to make the score at half time 31-0.

By now the visitors were beaten. They did not threaten the Burton try line again and they had no answer to the pace of the home team backs. Burton scored four more tries in a dominant second half. The first of these was scored by Lewis Brooks who fielded a poor clearance kick who raced up field and without slowing swerved around the winger to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.

The second of these tries went to Lewis Sturgess who broke through some weak tackling to score under the posts. Titley again added the two points. The third of these second half tries was also Oxley’s third (not the first hat trick he has scored this season) It was a superb solo effort running from inside his own half to score in the corner. The try was not converted

The final try went deservedly to Loz Betty who had worked very hard all afternoon making some penetrating runs and always in support. On this occasion it was Oxley again who drew the full back before making the final pass to Betty to score wide out. Malcolm Theo this time added the extra points to make the final score 55-0.

Another good win for Burton which sees them finish in third place in Midlands 1 West and gives them momentum for when they face Longton in the Staffordshire Cup final next Saturday.
