A Sunny Afternoon

A Sunny Afternoon

Claire Bradley9 Apr 2017 - 18:09

Burton, with a much changed side this week, kicked off in warm sunshine.

Unfortunately the rugby did not match the brightness of the afternoon. The performance in the first quarter was very lack lustre with a series of dropped passes and lack of penetration. The first score came from Whitchurch after Burton were penalised for an offence at the breakdown.

The Burton forwards then seemed to get themselves into gear and started to carry the ball well. They took it deep into the Whitchurch 22, recycled it quickly and passed it along the back line to flanker Lewis Sturgess who crashed through a tackle to score under the posts. Billy Peach converted.

The home side worked their way into the Burton half from the kick off and were awarded another penalty, for a high tackle, which the full back slotted over for another three points.

From the restart Burton found themselves under pressure again but this time the visitors were awarded a penalty. They cleared the ball to the half way line, won the line out and kicked for the corner. A poor throw by the Whitchurch hooker allowed Tom Murphy to steal the ball at the back of the line and charge over the goal line to score close to the posts. Peach again added the extra points.

The Burton forwards were soon in action again with the likes of Kelvin Browne, Ken Archer and Joe Gazzard driving the ball up the middle. From a lineout they set up a driving maul and hooker James Davies carried the ball over the line for the third try. Peach again kicked the conversion to make the score at half time 6-21.

After the restart Burton started to play some good rugby with forwards and backs combining to make inroads into the Whitchurch 22.
The ball was transferred along the back line to Billy Peach to score wide out. This time he was unable to convert.

The visitors again went on the attack and again backs and forwards combined to put pressure on the Whitchurch defence. After another good passing move Joe Gazzard was in support to score under the posts. Peach added the extra points.

Burton were then forced to make some changes to the scrum and found themselves under pressure on their own five meter line. The referee awarded a penalty try as the Burton front row stood up, an odd decision for a first offence.

This brought the home team back into the game at 13-33 and realising that they had nothing to lose they started to run the ball. Poor tackling in the Burton centre allowed them to score again. The conversion was missed.

Once more poor tackling in the visitor’s midfield allowed the home team to make good ground. After the ball carrier was finally brought down they recycled the ball and kicked for the corner. The winger gathered the ball and scored. This time the conversion went over from the touch line.

With the score now at 25-33 the Burton supporters became very jittery as the home team only needed to score twice more to take the lead. However Burton were to have the last word. A good kick by fly half Peach gave Whitchurch a lineout in their own 22. The Burton forwards stole the ball and it was passed quickly along the back line. Number eight Kelvin Browne was in support to take the ball and score, making the result safe.

Whitchurch tried to rally but time had run out on them. So the score at full time was 25-38.
