A good run from winger Lewis Brooks was stopped short and the visitors were able to clear the ball. However Burton were soon on the attack again and after some good running and handling by the backs, the ubiquitous Jack Neal popped up on the wing to open the scoring with a try in the left corner. The try was unconverted.
From the restart the home team forwards drove up the pitch. After a strong run by Ken Archer the ball was moved quickly along the back line for winger Dan Grimsdell to score on his home debut. The conversion was again missed.
Burton again pressurised the visitors defence with strong running by backs and forwards alike and after several phases fly half Harry Titley noticed that the Sutton right winger was out of position so he kicked for the corner. The kick was chased by full back Chas Bunting who ran around to score close to the posts. This time Dave Archer added the extra points. Archer also kicked penalty goal a few minutes later.
By this time the hosts were in control and the visitors were hardly able to get their hands on the ball. The Burton backs and forwards combined again to take the ball up field where it was recycled quickly and transferred to hooker James Davies who crashed through a tackle to score under the posts, securing a try bonus point before half time. Archer converted.
However Sutton Coldfield are a good team and once they were able to get their hands on the ball showed what they could do. Some slick handling by their backs resulted in a try for the right winger on the stroke of half time, making the score 27-5.
Burton seemed to have switched off just before half time and straight from the restart the visitors’ backs were in action again. Some poor tackling in midfield allowed the centre to score near the posts. The try was converted.
The home team’s lapse in concentration continued and from a scrum they allowed the Sutton winger far too much space. He set off from well inside his own half beating two or three defenders to score under the posts.
The home team then got themselves into gear again and the forwards began to take control. After several phases of the forwards driving at the Sutton goal line the ball was passed to fly half Titley who side stepped his opposite number to score under the posts. With the conversion again added by Archer, Burton were now seemingly home and dry at 34-19.
The visitors were not finished yet however, and were determined to earn themselves a try bonus point, which would make them numerically safe from relegation. They again attacked the Burton line and another missed tackle allowed them to score another converted try.
The home team had the last word however and in virtually the last action of the game. Lewis Brooks joined the line and sold an outrageous dummy, allowing him to score the final try under the posts. Archer again added the extra points making the final score Burton 41 Sutton Coldfield 26.
