Some Champagne Rugby

Some Champagne Rugby

Claire Bradley26 Mar 2017 - 18:26

The spring sunshine obviously helped Burton on Saturday, as especially in the first half, they played some champagne rugby.

From the kick off Burton got their passing game going immediately but some good tackling by the Stratford backs prevented a try. The home team cleared the ball but the Burton forwards combined to drive up the field and then the ball was passed swiftly along the backs for full back Chaz Bunting to open the scoring. Malcolm Theo converted.

Stratford won the ball from the restart and kicked into the visitors’ 22. Winger Theo fielded the ball but instead of clearing it to touch he decided to run he passed inside to Loz Betty who charged up field. Finding himself running out of space on the wing, he put in a high kick towards the goal posts. Full back Bunting raced up the middle of the pitch to catch the ball before it landed and score under the posts. Theo again added the extra points.

Burton went on the attack again from the restart but a knock on gave the home team the put into a scrum. The visitors took the ball against the head and passed it quickly along the line to left winger Daniel Grimsdell to score on his first team debut. Theo again kicked the conversion.

The Stratford backs showed that they could run with the ball and won a penalty as one the Burton defenders strayed offside. They took the kick for goal to keep them in the game at 3-21. However Burton retaliated and forwards and backs combined to charge up field.

From a lineout the forwards set up a driving maul and carried the ball to the line for another try. Kelvin Browne got the touchdown.
The visitors were now rampant and the forwards and backs combined to take the ball into the Stratford 22. The ball was quickly recycled and captain Jack Neale burst through two tackles to score the fifth try. Theo converted to make the score at half time 3-33.
From the restart Stratford won the ball and moved it quickly along the back line some sloppy tackling by the Burton backs allowed the home team to score their first try of the day. The conversion was missed.

When Stratford visited Burton earlier in the season they fought their way back from 36-7 to finish at 36-30, so the travelling support could be forgiven for being a little anxious at this stage as it became clear that the home team were going to run the ball at every opportunity. However on this occasion Burton defended well and were able to score two more tries before the end of the match. The first followed an accurate kick ahead by fly half Harry Titley. Winger Theo was able to gather the ball which was the moved along the backs for Bunting to score his third try. Theo again added the extra points. The second came after more good work by the forwards taking the ball almost up to the goal line and passing it to deceptively strong centre Jack Brooks who shrugged off a couple of tackles to score wide out. This time the try was unconverted.

The home team refused to give up however and had the last word in the game. After a typical run from their backs the winger was forced into touch. The Stratford forwards stole the ball at the line out and it was now their turn to set up a driving maul and score a second try. Time had run out for them however and the only further action was a missed penalty by the visitors which was the last kick of the game. The final score was 15-45.
