This weekend it was the turn of Stoke to come to Peel Croft to face a Burton side in good form despite losing narrowly to Newport last Saturday. The visitors started well with their forwards making a drive deep into Burton territory. The Burton defence held firm however, and they were able to clear their lines. It was then the home team pack’s turn to drive forward. They made good ground and then the ball was passed quickly along the back line for winger Lewis Brooks to score an unconverted try in the corner.
Burton were very quickly back in the Stoke half but a handling error gave Stoke a scrum and they were able to clear the ball to touch. From the lineout the home team won the ball and passed to number eight Kelvin Browne who ran from the 22 metre line to score under the posts. Dave Archer added the two extra points.
Burton attacked again from the restart and a chip ahead by Harry Titley forced a Stoke defender to carry the ball over his own line giving the home team a five metre scrum. They were penalised for a front row offence so could not score the push over try they expected but the visitors were not able to clear the ball very far and it was soon back in Burton hands again. Centre jack brooks made a great break and passed to the full back Dave Archer to score wide out. Archer was unable to add the extra points.
From the kick off Stoke were awarded a penalty which they took quickly but a handling error meant that the home team were awarded another scrum. They won the ball which was passed along the back line for winger Malcolm Theo to score. Archer kicked the conversion to make the score at half time 24-0
After the break Burton were soon into their stride again strong running by the backs found flanker Jack Neale on the wing to score a try. With a good kick from wide out Archer again added the extra points.
The visitors defended resolutely but they could not prevent the home team scoring two further tries. The first by fly half Harry Titley who with a great side step created a gap for himself to run in and score under the posts. The second by full back Archer who joined the back line to finish off another good passing movement. Archer converted the first of these tries but was unable to add the extra points to his own try.
Stoke refused to give up and a lapse in concentration by the Burton backs allowed the visitors to run from the halfway line to score a consolation try. They were unable to add to this and so Burton ran out worthy winners at 43-5.
