A Very Entertaining Game

A Very Entertaining Game

Claire Bradley19 Feb 2017 - 18:19

Burton welcomed Moseley Oak to Peel Croft for the first time on Saturday.

The home team started well and soon got into the visitors’ half. A kick for the corner gave Moseley Oak a lineout close to their own line, which they won, but then knocked the ball forward giving a scrum to Burton. The Burton scrum was solid and number eight Will Roach picked the ball up to charge over the line and score in the corner. The conversion was missed.

Burton were soon on the attack again forcing a poor clearance kick which went straight to full back Dave Archer who gave a long pass to winger Nick Oxley who ran from the half way line to score in the corner. Archer missed the conversion.

The visitors were an entirely different team, however to the one which Burton had beaten 67-8 in October with something like twelve different players in the fifteen. They got back into the game and put the home defence under pressure for a long period of time, patiently going through several phases. Burton tackled extremely well but eventually conceded a penalty for not rolling away, which the Moseley Oak centre kicked to open their scoring.

Burton attacked from the restart and forced a mistake in the visitors’ defence leading to a scrum on the 22 metre line. Although the Moseley Oak pack were good in loose play Burton had the edge in the set scrums. They won this one easily and the ball was transferred quickly to full back Archer who scored in the corner but failed to add the two extra points to his own try.

There followed another period of pressure by the visitors mainly through their forwards and although Burton defended well they could not prevent the Moseley oak centre from breaking through the line and scoring under the posts. The try was converted making the score at half time 15-10.

Burton got into their stride again quickly from the restart and with good work from forwards and backs alike they again forced an error from the visitors and were awarded a penalty which Archer kicked to take the score to 18-10.

Burton again went on the attack putting pressure on the visitors’ defence again. They eventually worked an overlap and a long pass found centre Jack Brooks to score in the corner virtually unopposed. Again the conversion was missed.

Burton were now looking good and would have scored two more tries if the final passes had not been deemed forward. However as has already been said this was not the Moseley Oak side they played in October and the home team had to endure a very uncomfortable last twenty minutes. The visitors scored two tries in this period. The first from a line out on the five meter line after they had been awarded a penalty for an offence at the breakdown and the second from a good run by their centre who scored under the posts.

This brought the score to 23-22 causing a very jittery last couple of minutes for the home spectators. The Burton forwards, however kept the ball close and worked their way into the visitors’ 22 where they were awarded a penalty. Archer kicked the goal to make the final score 26-22.

This was a very entertaining game with good rugby played by both sides. This deserved win, the sixth in a row, ensures that Burton stay in the playoff position, second in Midlands 1 West.
