Another Win on a Cold Day

Another Win on a Cold Day

Claire Bradley12 Feb 2017 - 18:54

On a very cold day at Kenilworth Burton went on the attack immediately with a good run from the backs forcing the home team to concede a penalty.

From the resulting lineout Burton won the ball but it was dropped in midfield giving a scrum to Kenilworth. However the visitors won the ball against the head and number eight Kelvin Browne picked the ball up to run in and score the visitors’ first try. Dave Archer converted.

The home team hit back and forced Burton to spend long periods in their own 22 forcing several penalties which they took quickly putting Burton’s defence under pressure. The referee’s patience eventually ran out and Browne was yellow carded for failing to roll away after a tackle. Down to 14 men Burton really had to work hard but conceded another penalty which this time the Kenilworth kicker slotted over to get them back in the game at 3-7.

When for the first time in over twenty minutes Burton got into the opposition half they won another scrum against the head. This time the ball was passed swiftly along the back line for winger Lewis Brooks to Score in the corner. Archer missed the conversion.

From the kick off the visitor’s defence came under pressure again and this time Tom Murphy was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes for an offence at the break down. The home team again kicked the penalty goal. Burton were able to hold on to half time with no further scoring so the score at the break was 6-12.

After the restart and back to full strength Burton tightened up their game and managed to score 26 unanswered points. The forwards made good yardage with the ball in hand and the backs started to handle well. From a scrum on the halfway line the ball travelled quickly along the back line to full back Archer who made a penetrating run to find Joe Gazzard in support to take the ball over the try line. The conversion was missed.

Burton went back on the attack immediately and after a rampaging run by Ken Archer, who made several yards and took out several defenders the ball was recycled quickly and passed along the back line to full back Dave Archer to score a well earned try which he converted himself.

By this time the Burton pack was well on top in the set scrums, as it had been for most of the match. From another scrum they drove the ball forward and the backs and forwards combined to set up a try for Loz Betty. Archer again added the extra points.

After that there was a period of handling errors on both sides but the visitors eventually won a penalty close to the Kenilworth goal line. Because of their superiority in the set scrum they opted for a scrum instead of kicking for goal. They again drove the Kenilworth scrum back getting a pushover try with Kelvin Browne touching the ball down for his second try which Archer again converted.

The home team tried to rally but by this time the forwards were tired as a result of the punishment they had taken up front and Burton were able to see the game out without their line being breached. The final result was Kenilworth 6 Burton 38. Burton stay in second place in Midlands 1 West but only two points ahead of Bournville who have a game in hand.
