Another Victory for Burton

Another Victory for Burton

Claire Bradley22 Jan 2017 - 13:18

Burton travelled to Kingswinford on Saturday hoping for a repeat of the victory they had over Dudley at home in October.

The match started well with both sides trying to run with the ball but with both defences tackling well, so that neither side was able to penetrate.

The home team worked their way into the visitors’ 22 but they knocked the ball on. The ball was picked up by Burton and immediately passed to winger Nick Oxley who ran from well inside the 22 meter line to outstrip the home defenders and score in the corner. The conversion was missed.

For the rest of the half there was no further scoring, with both sides again cancelling each other out and both sides making handling errors, possibly due to the very cold weather. The score at half time was therefore 0-5.

From the restart Dudley again attacked but the Burton defence again was strong. The vistitors then worked their way, through the forwards and backs, into the Dudley half and were awarded a penalty as one of the home team centres stayed offside. Malcolm Theo kicked the goal to make the score now 0-8.

Dudley were spurred into action and put pressure on the Burton defence causing one of the Burton forwards to receive a yellow card for killing the ball on the floor. However Burton successfully defended the lineout and managed to score twice in the ten minute period in which they were a man short. First Will Roach breaking off from a maul in the Dudley 22 crashed through the centre to score under the posts and then some slick handling by Darryl Banton and Jack Brooks put Nick Oxley in for his second try of the afternoon. Theo kicked the first conversion but missed the second. The score was now 0-22.

It appears that the visitors lost concentration after this as shortly afterwards their line was broken by the Dudley centre who ran in to score close to the posts. The conversion was missed.

With their defence coming under pressure again another Burton player was sin binned as the referee deemed he had deliberately knocked the ball on. The visitors sensibly kept the ball tight and although the forwards were driving hard they were unable to breach the goal line and secure the fourth try for the bonus point. Instead as two of these attacks broke down the home team were able to break through a tired Burton defence to score twice under the posts. The first of these tries was converted but the second which was the last kick of the game was missed. The final score was therefore Dudley Kingswinford 17, Burton 22.

Dudley received a well earned losing bonus point but Burton failed to get the try bonus point. They are now in second place in the league but Bournville did not play so they have a game in hand.
