Another Good Win for Burton

Another Good Win for Burton

Claire Bradley11 Dec 2016 - 12:40

Burton entertained Whitchurch on Saturday.

The Shropshire side were eighth in the table but previous encounters between the two sides have usually been close fought so a good game was anticipated.

It did not take the home team long to get on the score sheet. Good work from the Burton forwards forced a Whitchurch defender to give away a penalty after four minutes. Dave Archer stepped up to kick the goal.

The visitors were getting a fair share of possession but the Burton defence was solid denying them any scoring opportunities. The home team worked their way back into the visitors’ half and won a lineout. Fly half Malcolm Theo kicked across field for winger Dave archer to gather and score. He converted his own try.

Burton worked their way back into the Whitchurch half and again caused the visitors problems. The ball was passed quickly along the back line for Archer to again score in the corner. This time he missed the conversion. However he added three more penalties before half time including one from only five metres inside the opposition half. The score at half time was, therefore, 24-0 with all the points being scored by Archer.

The first part of the second half was a turgid affair with both sides making handling errors in the damp conditions. However the Burton forwards started to get on top with some strong ball carrying and from about the hour mark the home team backs had a purple patch. With some superb passing and excellent running they started to carve up the Whitchurch defence. Following such a move the ball found its way to hooker James Davies who burst through the defence to score under the posts. Archer added the two points.

More great running from the backs took play again into the Whitchurch half. The ball was recycled quickly and passed along the back line again for substitute Darryl Banton, supporting on the outside, to score in the corner. Archer kicked the conversion from the touchline. No more points were scored so the final score was Burton 38 Whitchurch 0.

This was another good win for Burton which sees them remain at third place in Midlands 1 West, at the halfway point in the season. Next Saturday they travel to second placed Bournville who are only one point ahead so this should be an exciting encounter.
