Burton travelled to Sutton Coldfield on Saturday to meet a team next to the bottom of the league. The visitors got off to another bad start which this time cost them the match. From the kick off the Sutton pack pressurised the ball receiver Will Roach who did well to keep the ball and set up a ruck. However instead of going to touch the clearance kick went straight down the middle of the field into the arms of the Sutton fullback, who ran through the Burton defence to score under the posts. The conversion was kicked to make the score 7-0.
As they have had to, many times this season, Burton fought their way back into the game. After some strong running by the backs they were awarded a penalty for a high tackle. Dave Archer slotted the kick over to make the score 7-3.
The two sides seemed evenly matched at this point but the visitors again attacked through the forwards and backs with the ball eventually finding its way to centre Loz Betty who scored near the touchline to put Burton into the lead. The penalty was missed so the score was now 7-8.
Both teams were trying to attack causing mistakes by the defences. Penalties were exchanged making the half time score 10-11.
From the kick off both sides again tried to play attacking rugby with the defences holding up well. Burton eventually created an opportunity which they took eagerly. Loz Betty made a fine pass to winger Jack Handy who dived in at the corner to put the visitors further in front. The conversion was missed.
Sutton were desperate for a win however and their backs and forwards alike worked really hard. Their young replacement fly half in particular pinned the visitors back with some good kicks to the corner. The pressure led to the ball being passed along the back line for the Sutton winger to make a brilliant side step to score near to the posts. The score now 15-16.
The visiting supporters breathed a sigh of relief when the kicker missed the conversion meaning Burton were still ahead. This did not last long however as the home side attacked again winning another penalty following a mistake by the Burton defence. This time the kicker made no mistake so the home team took the lead at 18-16.
From the restart the Sutton fly half again made a good kick to push the visitors back to their own 22 metre area. Burton tried to keep the ball alive but eventually ran out of time. A handling error gave Sutton a scrum. They won the ball and kicked it into touch to win the game.
This was an entertaining match with some good rugby played on both sides. Burton had a chance to rise to second place in the league today but were unable to take it. They will again be ruing a poor start.
