Burton loose to Leek

Ian W Cartwright6 Mar 2016 - 11:35

Very young side gove a good account pf themse

A much changed Burton side made the trip to Leek such that only three players were starting in the same positions as a week earlier. Following up their Kick off Burton soon turned over and mounted a multi-phase attack. Liam Hucknall, Josh Shaw, Alfie Grant, Ed Saunders, Daryl Banton and Joe Briggs got their hands on the ball before a penalty was conceded for holding on. Leek made their way into the Burton half before Harry Titley made an interception and released Jack Neal on a counter-attack. From a penalty Titley kicked to touch and from fifteen metres out the Burton pack drove forward for Hucknall to score. The kick was missed and shortly afterwards Leek missed a penalty. James Davies and Shaw made carries but Burton conceded a penalty which Leek kicked to touch. Leek drove a maul before spinning the ball across their back line. A pass went to ground and bounced up to hand before the Left Wing crossed in the corner. The kick went wide so the scores remained level at 5-5.
Joe Gazzard smashed the re-start catcher, Briggs turned over and then Leek conceded a penalty. Titley kicked for touch. Eddie Nicholls and Adam Smith made a couple of carries each but Burton couldn’t make the pressure tell before Leek intercepted and Chaz Bunting’s cover tackle halted play on half way. Spuddy Taylor then turned over and again Burton attacked without being able to score. Shaw was injured was replaced by Jeri Oldfield with Gazzard moving to Prop.
Following the break kicks were exchanged before Leek had a line-out in the Burton half. Gazzard stole the ball and Saunders made a thirty metre carry. The game ebbed and flowed before Banton seized on a loose pass and then released Joe Gorman who made thirty metres before being hauled down five metres short of the line. Burton were penalised at a scrum and Leek cleared to touch.
Leek set up a maul in open play and drove forward towards the posts. Taylor was Yellow Carded and Leek kicked the penalty.
Leek attacked again but lost the ball and Gorman produced a superb touch-finder. Burton regained the ball and attacked. Hucknall broke from the back of a maul and reached the line only for the ball to slip from his grasp.
Burton attacked again but were penalised for crossing. Leek made their way onto the Burton half and piled on the pressure. Burton defended both courageously and well during a ten minute period. Leek had the majority of possession; Bunting very nearly took an interception but the pressure was relentless. Nicholls was yellow-carded and despite a spirited effort from this exceptionally young Burton side they couldn’t manufacture a scoring opportunity. The game finished 8-5 to Leek and Burton took away a solitary bonus point.
