Burton slip from Cruise Control into Neutral

A bright start for Burton soon seemed a distant memory as Worcester clawed their way back into the game and then took it away from the hosts.

Burton kicked off, Worcester knocked on and the first ominous signs came when the Burton pack were sent backwards in the scrum. However Jack Brooks and Tom Benjamin made carries before Nick Oxley jinked through passed the Centres and powered his way over the line. The Referee was on hand to adjudge the ball held up. Burton maintained the momentum through runs from Dave Archer and Jack Neale, with the latter scoring a neat try and former converting.

Burton were driven back at the next scrum but Joe Gazzard and Daryl Banton got the ball away before Neal broke the line and found Tom Harris on his shoulder who barged his way over for a try. Archer then missed his only kick of the day.

Worcester didn’t seem too threatening at this stage and when they made it to the Burton twenty two Joe Briggs and Joe Gazzard gang-tackled powerfully but Briggs was penalised. The straightforward kick was missed and all seemed well for Burton.

Worcester were penalised for joining a ruck from the side and Archer effortlessly stroked the ball over from 40 metres. Props Matt Tivey and Tom Murphy crashed the ball up for Burton. The lead was soon increased with another long range penalty from Archer.

Worcester mounted their first attack and grubber kicked over the try line but Hooker James Davies red it well and touched the ball down. The drop out was sent long and the receiver ran past four would be tacklers to score under the posts to make the conversion a formality. Tom Benjamin was injured in his attempt to stop the attacker and was replaced by Jon Leason a late stand-in for Lee English who had been injured in the warm-up.

Burton lost the ball in the opponents half and again ineffective tackling allowed Worcester to score from long range.

Murphy and Davies powered their way forward before a knock-on but Burton then played through several phase and were awarded a penalty on half way. Archer made the kick with at least five meters to spare and Burton led 21-14. Worcester missed a penalty just before the break and Burton went in leading 21-14.

The next score was going to be crucial and a friendly bounce after went into a Worcester kick chasers hands and he only had to flop over the line for a try. The conversion attempt bounced wide off the post. Francisco Zeleme replaced Tovey who was suffering from the effects of food-poisoning.

Worcester drove Burton back 15 meters in as scrum and with the kick to touch made their gain 50 meters. A further penalty was kicked to the corner but after a crooked throw Burton had the put in at a scrum. Worcester won the ball against the head and scored a try from the base. With a successful conversion Worcester took the lead for the first time.

Burton fought back through Jack Brooks and Banton but then conceded a penalty on the twenty two. Davies left the field for medical attention and Worcester drove the ball over for a try from 15 metres. The try made the deficit 12 points which now seemed like a mountain to climb for the hosts.

Lewis Sturgess replaced Ben Cook on the Flank and then a Yellow Card was awarded to a Worcester player, however on his way over to the Referee he was shoved by a Burton player and the Penalty was reversed. Worcester kicked to within 20 metres but then the throw-in wasn’t straight. Burton smartly opted for the throw-in before Archer and Benjamin broke out of their half only for Burton to concede a Penalty at a ruck and they lost Harris to a Yellow Card.

Worcester received another Yellow Card for a high tackle on Davies, but Burton lacked precision in the next phase and the opportunity was thwarted.

Archer made a 50 metre break but his off-load was knocked on. A Free Kick conceded at the scrum added to Burton’s woes and then a great touch-finding kick pegged Burton deep into their twenty two. Burton produced good line out but conceded a penalty and the Worcester kicker wasn’t missing anything at this stage.

Burton rallied, Zeleme, Davies and Cook then set up a three on one situation but then butchered it to see their hopes pf revival slip way.

Worcester missed a final kick but it was irrelevant as they had succeeded in knocking Burton from the top of the league with a quite remarkable comeback.
