What might have been!

What might have been!

Fifteen minutes of error strewn madness cost Burton their best chance of victory in the last ten games.

Knowing that a defeat this week would put their losing run into double figures Burton travelled to Broadstreet intending to up their game and re-find their try scoring performances from the start of the season. Indeed a first half display that saw them unlucky to be trailing 14-10 at the break augured well for Burton. But after a first half full of hope and desire a fifteen minute spell immediately after the restart saw missed tackles and unforced errors soon put paid to any victory hopes as the hosts coasted into an unassailable 33-10 lead.

A late change, because of an injury to fly half Tom Barlow, saw Ian Gilmour step up from the bench to start the game and Tom Murphy take his place on the bench. On a dull overcast afternoon with the floodlights on from the start of the game Broadstreet kicked-off and a good take by Rob Wakelin soon saw Danny Clarke driving into the opposition ranks to set up a ruck. But the ball was lost and Broadstreet were awarded a scrum in the centre of the pitch. A good surge from the Burton pack put the opposition scrum under pressure but they managed to get the ball away to be awarded a penalty at the next ruck. But their kicker had yet to find his range and the kick from in front of the posts sailed wide.

Boosted by this miss Burton stormed back onto the attack and were soon camped in their opponents half that to some powerful forward bursts, including one bulldozing run by Matt Tivey that saw him make twenty metres before four tacklers managed to haul him down. From the ensuing ruck Burton were awarded a penalty and Gilmour put the ball deep into the Broadstreet twenty-two. Josh Cartwright took the lineout and Darryl Banton spun the ball out to Gilmour. He passed to Craig Dutton and looped round to re-take the ball and feed out to the other backs, but unfortunately the final pass to Danny Smith went behind him and a chance was gone. The Burton pack was giving its opposite numbers a torrid time and were rewarded by gaining the put-in after the Broadstreet scrum was pushed backwards at a rate of knots. Burton were now playing with a passion and purpose that has been sadly lacking in recent games and Smith, Dutton, Dave Archer and Lawrence Betty all made ground given this new found space. Broadstreet used high deep kicks to try and unsettle Burton but Harry Titley, Gilmour, Archer and Smith all combined well to deal with this threat and set up attacks from those that failed to find touch. Another lineout steal by Cartwright saw the Burton pack, led by Joel Booth, Ben Grocott and Will Brooks, surge into the twenty-two, but another penalty against Burton gave the hosts a chance to clear. The referee’s whistle came to Broadstreet’s aid on far too many occasions and meant that Burton were continually forced to re-win vital ground.

A fantastic tackle by Dutton won Burton a penalty as the referee at last realised Broadstreet were a little slow at releasing the ball. Archer safely put the ball into touch in the opponents half with a booming forty-metre punt. Grocott won the lineout and Burton drove forward again only to again incur the wrath of the referee as he awarded an opposition scrum that allowed them to clear. But, salmon like Cartwright leaped to steal again and Burton’s pack drove twenty metres up field before Banton released the backs for Betty and Smith to again make ground. Burton won a penalty and Gilmour put the ball into touch. A safe take by Brooks saw Burton’s pack set up a series of rolling mauls to get within ten metres of the opposition line. Broadstreet forced Burton into touch for a lineout but another steal by Cartwright saw Banton burst clear and touch down for a try. Archer’s conversion from wide out just missed the upright but Burton now led 5-0 after twenty-five minutes.

As so often happen in Burton games the restart was not dealt with and Broadstreet took full advantage to set-up a series of powerful forward bursts that led to them touching down for a converted try just a couple of minutes later. But Burton bounced straight back and after the pack had set up good field position on the opposition ten-metre line a good solid Burton scrum saw Banton break down the blind side. Confronted by three or four defenders Banton kicked over their heads for the ball to land in the dead-ball area. With supporters groaning that it was too far ahead Danny Smith raced through to touch down for Burton second try. Archer conversion again shaved the upright but Burton were back in the lead at 10-7 as halftime approached. A penalty for crossing against Burton at the restart saw the Broadstreet side charge towards the Burton line. Solid Burton defending, particularly by Kelvin Brown, Titley and Booth, kept the home side at bay and at times forced them back. But after four minutes of pressure the line eventually cracked and Broadstreet got another converted try just as the half-time whistle sounded. This score left Burton trailing 14-10 much against the run of play after a half that had certainly seen a re-vitalised Burton display.

Perhaps Burton should have asked for the game to only have one half and carried on playing rather than take the usual break because whatever happened or was said during it the next fifteen minutes saw Burton disintegrate as the game was lost. Initially in this second half both packs tested each other as they battled to gain dominance but with just three minutes gone a rapid point’s feast sealed the game for the hosts. A Broadstreet scrum saw the ball spun out wide where Burton’s normally impeccable wide defence was breached as a tackle was missed and the overlapping fly half raced in to score a try. At this point Jon Edwards replaced Cartwright who had injured his knee and a superb steal at a lineout was his first contribution to the game as he set up a great Burton drive, but a knock-on saw Broadstreet gain a scrum. They again spun the ball out wide before moving it back inside and another missed tackle saw them break the line and their powerful No 8 crashed over for a converted try. Another badly handled restart saw Broadstreet given a scrum on the Burton ten-metre line. An initial pick-up by their No 8 to set up a ruck for the opposition scrum half to break clear to race sixty-metres to touchdown under the posts for another converted try and mark an end to a nineteen point burst in less than fifteen minutes.

Burton now seemed to panic and started to make too many unforced errors with poorly times passes or badly directed kicks. Jon Evans replaced Banton as Edwards was sin-binned for repeat offences. Another Broadstreet lineout near Burton’s line saw their pack roll forward to get their final try and take the score to 38-10.

With ten minutes to go and after numerous offences a home player was yellow carded and Tom Murphy replaced Rob Wakelin. Dutton and Evans both took quick tap penalties to try and break up field but the fire seemed to have been sapped from Burton as they struggled to maintain any momentum as the game came to an end.
