Burton Robbed

Steve Harris9 Oct 2010 - 22:21

This one certainly never went to Specsavers, I thought refereeing would get better higher up the leagues but how wrong can you be !!

A try four minutes from full-time took victory from Burton’s grasp, but they still remain in seventh place after this close game. Sitting second in the table compared to Burton’s seventh Broadstreet had journeyed to Peel Croft fully expecting an easy victory, but left feeling very lucky that one or two strange refereeing decisions had seen them get the victory.

A late change caused by injury to Sam Smith saw John Philliskirk move off the bench to full-back as Dave Archer moved onto the right wing in Smith’s absence. Ex-Colt Joe Gazzard moved up onto the bench to give Burton cover. Burton kicked-off into the breeze and a series of kicks finally saw Broadstreet make ground to the Burton ten-metre line. The visitors piled on the pressure and as Ian Gilmour tried to clear his kick was charged down, but an offside against Broadstreet allowed him to clear to halfway. In a game where the breakdown area was continually poorly refereed Broadstreet were given a penalty and put the ball deep into the home twenty-two. A great Burton counter effort stopped the opposition pack from driving over from the lineout and they won a five-metre scrum. Good, quick ball saw the Broadstreet winger take the ball on the inside and although held by two Burton players he was allowed to wriggle free and dive over to score. With the easy conversion being missed Broadstreet led 5-0 after as many minutes.

From the restart John Philliskirk and Dave Archer took the ball up the right touchline to reach the opposition twenty-two for a Burton scrum. The ball was spun out along the line and as Burton’s pack drove into the breakdown a penalty saw the visitors kick clear to halfway. Good pressure from the home side saw Burton going on the offensive with Joel Booth, Ben Grocott, Danny Clarke and Kelvin Browne leading the way backed up by the rest of the Burton pack this resulted in a Burton penalty and Gilmour kicked to deep inside the opposition twenty-two. Josh Cartwright took the ball and Booth drove forward before releasing the backs where Craig Dutton timed his pass to perfection to set Harry Titley bursting for the line. But the ball was lost and kicked clear where Archer luckily gathered the bouncing ball .He drove forward with Jon Edwards, Philliskirk, Titley and Dutton in support. Once stopped John Evans at scrumhalf snapped up the ball and broke clear to race twenty-metres before passing back inside to on rushing Charl Neethling who dashed the last twenty metres to canter in for a try. Archer added the extra points and Burton now led 7-5.

But a bustling run by a Broadstreet flanker took play to within five metres of the Burton line and their prop forward followed up to barge his way over in the corner for an unconverted try. Now trailing 7-10 Burton stormed forward and Kelvin Browne gathered the restart to race inside the visitor’s twenty-two. Broadstreet cleared the danger but a Burton penalty saw Gilmour put the ball back deep into their twenty-two. A great take by Cartwright was driven on by Booth, Edwards, Wakelin and Clarke the ball was released and spun along the line to Titley, but play was pulled back for a Burton penalty and Archer duly added the three points to put the teams level at 10-10.

With the opposition continually being allowed to advance over the advantage line and enter the rucks and mauls from any position, Burton looked to be at a loss as they conceded a penalty and a converted try as Broadstreet capitalised on this. Then with two minutes of the half to go Browne had to leave the field with an injured shoulder to be replaced by Jon Parkinson.

The second half started with Neethling taking the ball and charging into the opposition when stopped he found Dutton in support and he drove the ball forward for another fifteen metres. He fed Evans who put in a little kick ahead but as he followed up he was blatantly body-checked and the Broadstreet prop was yellow carded for his efforts. Archer’s effort from halfway from the resulting penalty hit the posts to the opposition’s relief. Burton’s Booth left the field with a cut eye and so Joe Gazzard made a cameo debut for two minutes while treatment was given. Broadstreet replied quickly and a mark by Philliskirk saw him return the ball back into their twenty-two with a well-judged kick. Cartwright stole the lineout and Booth drove forward. When stopped Evans spun the ball out to Gilmour who darted through the cover to draw the fullback and feed Titley who dived over the line for a try. Archer again added the extra points and put the score to 17-20 with thirty minutes remaining.

Unfortunately duting this action Rob Wakelin injured his knee and had to leave the field to be replaced by Nathan Taylor, who immediately had an impact as he drove into a maul and Burton won a penalty, but Archer's kick from forty-metres out just missed the target. Broadstreet again roared back and a break by their centre saw him racing for the line but good work by Dan Smith and Archer stopped him in his tracks. But they were again awarded a penalty which sailed between the posts to take the score to 17-23.

Burton were then penalised for wheeling a scrum in the centre of the pitch as the Broadstreet frontrow stood had up but an easy penalty was justifiably missed. This spurred Burton on and they surged back upfield and a lineout in the opposition twenty-two was well taken by Cartwright and the Burton pack began to roll towards the line. When the maul was halted just a metre from the line Evans spun the ball out to Gilmour who threw a missed pass to the charging Philliskirk, who too the ball at pace to touchdown under the posts and Archer added the extra points.

Burton now led 24-23 with seven minutes to go, but instead of keeping the ball close they allowed it to be pass out once too often and Broadstreet quickly snatched the ball away and raced up towards the Burton line. Philliskirk and Smith tackled the player a metre short of the line and as both packs arrived the Broadstreet lock stayed on the ground and crawled to grab the ball and touch it down over the line. The referee amazingly awarded a try that was converted to give Broadstreet a very lucky let-off and a victory that they possible expected but didn’t deserve.
