Burton Miss Out on 2nd losing Bonus Point in High Scoring Game at Broadstreet

Burton Miss Out on 2nd losing Bonus Point in High Scoring Game at Broadstreet

Robert Nesbitt2 Oct 2022 - 12:58

Burton stage brilliant second half comeback but let things slip through their fingers after taking the lead with 8 minutes to go.

Burton travelled to Broadstreet looking to get back to winning ways following their close loss to Bridgnorth last time out. Conditions underfoot were remarkably good despite the rain yesterday and just prior to kick off, assisted no doubt, by a strong drying breeze, which was blowing across the pitch. Burton kicked off the game deep into Broadstreet territory and the home team patiently went through a number of phases in possession, progressing back into the Burton half until a knock-on resulted in a Burton scrum. The referee was not happy with the scrum was set so he ordered it to be re-set following which he awarded Broadstreet a free kick. A small gap in the centre of the pitch was exposed by some clever offloading by Broadstreet who opened the scoring with a converted try beneath the posts after just 4 minutes. Broadstreet 7-0 Burton.
Burton gave away a penalty from the re-start and allowed Broadstreet back into their half following a good kick for touch. Burton then got the opportunity to put pressure on the home defence as Will Simpson found touch with a very good kick up to the home 5-metre line on the left following an offside infringement by Broadstreet. Although Burton won the line-out they were driven out into touch by the home pack. The referee spotted a knock-on by Burton prior to this and awarded Broadstreet the put-in at the scrum. A further home clearance only advanced the home team a further 5 metres or so with the throw at for another Burton line-out.
Burton were looking to turn pressure into points from this opportunity and unfortunately were hindered by the referee who got in the way of a pass as they got closer to the home try line on the right. From the resulting scrum the home team were penalised for not driving straight and Simpson made no mistake with the attempt at goal after 13 minutes. Broadstreet 7-3 Burton.
A rather scrappy re-start kick was collected fortuitously by Broadstreet, and they entered Burton’s “22” once again on the left but the threat was short-lived as the home team knocked -on. A Burton clearance kick did not find touch and allowed Broadstreet to run the ball back at Burton. Despite a crunching tackle in midfield by Alex Nesbitt the ball was recycled very nicely and led to a second converted try for the home team on the left after 16 minutes. Broadstreet 14-3 Burton. At this stage of the game Burton were being exposed by some very effective offloading play by Broadstreet and needed to find a solution to this if they were to stay in the game.
Burton were forced to go on the attack in an attempt to counter this and on a couple of occasions ran the ball when it was not really on. Simple handling errors also contributed to increasing the confidence of the home team to continue with their offloading game and it was not long before Broadstreet added to their lead. There was a big suspicion of a forward pass in the move that led to their third converted try mid-way through the half, which went unspotted by the referee. Broadstreet 21-3 Burton.
It was a case of deja-vu with the bonus point try for the home team after 26 minutes as the travelling Burton supporters were left scratching their heads as to why that forward pass was not picked up. A successful conversion meant that Broadstreet had increased their lead to Broadstreet 28-3 Burton. Burton then enjoyed some much-needed possession and began to make inroads into the home defence. However, they suffered again with simple errors at key moments that meant they were not able to get themselves back into the game. As the whistle blew for half time Burton decided to stay out on the pitch rather than go inside the changing room to try and get themselves motivated for a massive second half effort needed if they were to get anything out of this game.
The second half began in similar fashion the first from a Burton perspective with yet another error handing possession to Broadstreet. Thankfully this did not last long as Burton began to impose themselves on the game notably through John Kirwan who was involved twice in Burton’s first attack on the Broadstreet line with Kirwan feeding Chaz Bunting who scored Burton’s first try of the game after just 2 minutes of the second half. Simpson added the conversion and Burton had got the ideal start to the second half they needed. Broadstreet 28-10 Burton.
It was not long before Burton were again knocking on the door of the home try line and they were rewarded for their increased efforts when Lewis Sturgess scored wide on the left. Simpson added the extras with an excellent kick and Burton were closing in on Broadstreet very quickly. Broadstreet 28-17 Burton. The deficit was reduced again soon after as Burton continued to pressurise the home defence in a very encouraging way from the Burton perspective. Will Hopwood scored, the now rampaging Burton’s 3rd try of the game, which went unconverted to leave the score Broadstreet 28-22 Burton.
There was then a halt in the Burton revival as the home team gained some composure and started to make their offloading game tick again. Aided by a very generous refereeing decision Broadstreet moved the ball from left to right and scored in the corner. The conversion went over via the post and Broadstreet had extended their lead again to two scores. Broadstreet 35-22 Burton. To their credit the Burton side had great belief they were still able to get something out of this game and went in search of further points taking the game by the scruff of the neck and really imposing themselves upon the opposition. It was no surprise when Sturgess went over after 28 minutes for Burton’s bonus point try. Simpson added the conversion to move Burton back to within one score. Broadstreet 35-29 Burton.
Burton had their tails up now and sensed a real possibility of victory. Although the game swung like a pendulum either side of the half-way line neither side could put together many phases of play without it being turned over and there was a sense of neither team wanting to give away anything. Tackles were fair but hard and this added to the sense of stalemate until a maul was just being formed inside the Broadstreet half on the left. Nesbitt was quick to get a hold on the ball and ripped it from a Broadstreet player’s hands, then proceeded to sprint away from the defensive cover and scored a try just on the left. Simpson added the important conversion to take Burton into the lead for the first time in the game. Broadstreet 35-36 Burton with just 8 minutes to go.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as Broadstreet found a gap in the Burton defence very soon after this, to score their 6th converted try of the game Broadstreet 42-36 Burton. Soon after this a yellow card was issued to one player on each side following a very minor looking tussle on the floor as Broadstreet once again put pressure on the Burton defence. The final score of the game went to Broadstreet, and also denied Burton of a second losing bonus point, as they moved the ball wide to the Burton left to score in the corner. Another excellent conversion made it 7 out of 7 for the home kicker and leave the final score Broadstreet 49-36 Burton. Despite a much improved second half, Burton will be disappointed to come out of this game with just one point and slip to 5th in the league table.
