Final for Burton

Final for Burton

Claire Bradley19 Nov 2017 - 20:16

Burton had a break from league rugby on Saturday, when they travelled to Lichfield for the Staffordshire cup semi final.

In the early exchanges both sides tried to attack but the defences cancelled each other out. When the Lichfield forwards tried to run the ball from inside their own half they turned it over. The ball was quickly transferred to winger Leroy Bitterhout who chipped the ball over the head of his opposite number and re-gathered it to open the scoring for the visitors. The conversion was missed.

Burton then had a try disallowed. Prop James Davies made a break and showing the skill and awareness of a fly half chipped the ball to the corner. However when Chaz Bunting collected the ball and dived over the line he was deemed to have been in front of the kicker. A short time later the Burton pack were over the line but inexplicably, instead of awarding the try, he gave Burton a penalty on the five metre line for a front row offence. Unfortunately Burton were unable to score from the penalty.

But the visitors were now in the ascendancy and after some good driving the ball was transferred to centre Jack Brooks who made a half break and found full back Will Simpson in support to score. Bunting added the extra points to make the score at this stage 0-12.

There was no further scoring so this was the score at the interval with Burton seemingly in control. Burton started the second half as they finished the first with the forwards driving deep into Lichfield territory where the ball was recycled quickly and passed to Jack Brooks who fended off his opposite number to run in for a well deserved try.

Burton were then able to keep the home team pinned down in their own 22 for a long period but when they finally broke out some poor tackling by the Burton defence allowed them to score under the posts. The kicker added the extra points to make the score now 7-17.

This obviously spurred the Midlands premier division side on and they scored again after some strong running and slick passing put the winger into the corner. The try was again converted which brought the home team to within three points. At this stage Burton could have capitulated but they showed that they can compete at this level and the forwards who all made immense tackles all afternoon stole the ball from a maul and gave it to scrum half Bunting who ran around the blind side and then under the posts. He converted his own try.

Burton were soon on the attack again and were awarded a penalty. Bunting kicked the three points to make the score now 14-27 meaning that Lichfield had to score twice to win the game. They did score once more after their fly half intercepted a pass to run in and score under the posts he added the extra points. This caused a few anxious moments amongst the Burton travelling supporters but the visitors were able to hold on to win, with the final score being Lichfield 21 Burton 27.

Burton will now face another Midlands premier side, Longton in the final but next week they return to league rugby in the Midlands 1 West game at Stoke.
