Burton cruise to victory in the Staffs Cup

Steve Harris1 Sep 2009 - 06:41

As expected Burton cruised through into the next round of the Staffordshire County Cup

with a very comfortable 46-7 victory over Wolves at their Castlecroft ground. At the start of this new season Burton demonstrated that with plenty of pace out wide they are a side well able to score points given a good supply of ball. There were good showing by newcomers Danny Clarke and Joe Carpenter, while youngsters Sam Benjamin, Dan Eastwood and Dan Smith all continued to impress. Possibly more points could have been scored but with the team working on playing the game to their proposed game plan and pattern at times this limited their scoring opportunities.

Wolves kicked-off into the strong diagonal wind and with the ball sailing into touch Burton's pack soon had an ideal chance to show their power, but feeding at the scrum led to Wolves regaining possession. But Burton stole the ball back and good forward drives by Joe Carpenter, Tom Bartram, Rob Wakelin and Charl Neethling took play into the opponents 22. With Danny Clarke winning the ball against the head the ball was spun out to Dave Archer who scorched over for a try that he converted himself giving Burton a 7-0 lead after just 5 minutes.

Will Brooks took the restart and charged forward, galloping some thirty metres into the Wolves 22 before being stopped and a penalty for not rolling away saw Archer step up to convert and increase the lead to 10-0.

Burton now lapsed into a period of play that saw individuals taking the ball on just that bit too far resulting in lost chances. During this times Burton's penalty count also increased as offside decisions led to "reckless talk" that upset the referee and Wolves nearly got on the score board when one of these sailed just wide of the upright.

Some solid forward moves got play back into the home 22 and a penalty in front of the posts saw three points ignored as John Philliskirk hastily tapped and drove to the line only to be stopped and was penalised for Wolves to clear the danger.

But Burton now started to give the ball more width instead of forcing play down the middle of the park. This soon paid dividends when Benjamin took a pass from Lewis Brookes to jink his way inside and passed two defenders to score for Archer to convert and increase the lead to 17-0 with ten minutes to go before the break.

The Burton team continued to attack but a wayward pass, after a break by Tom Gregory and Darryl Banton, resulted in a Wolves lineout instead of a Burton try. Carpenter caught a clearance kick and raced forward into the home 22, supported by Brooks and Eastwood they set up good quick ball that was spun out wide for Archer to race in for his second try. From the restart a great kick by Banton took play back into the home 22 and after some good forward pressure that saw Simon Spencer and Wakelin nearly get over the line the ball was again spun out wide for Benjamin to get his second try of the day. The half-time whistle sounded as Archer's conversion just scraped the wrong side of the upright and Burton went into the break leading 27-0.

The second half was a very unspectacular affair and although Burton added further tries by Lewis Brooks, Gregory and Archer. Burton rang the changes with Chris Atchison, Ian Gilmour, Craig Dutton, Rich Wilton and Danny Smith entering the fray and possibly these changes, but definitely a massive penalty count against Burton stopped any flow to the game. Unfortunately Burton blotted their copybook near the end of the game when they allowed Wolves to drive over for a converted try from a lineout some six metres from the Burton line. So with a final 46-7 score the Burton team, led by new captain Tom Batram, left the field knowing that they had won but that there was still work to be done before they get down to league rugby against Walsall on the Croft next week.
