Burton welcomed Coventry Welsh to the Croft on Sunday for their 2nd league fixture, Burton fielded an fairly in-experienced pack with 4 key forwards unable to take the filed, however the backs looked good with some speed on the wings. Coventry turned up with a big squad of players and looked to have a bit more youth in their team than Burton. So it proved Coventry were a good well drilled athletic team who had excellent ball retention and stuck to a fairy simple round the corner game plan and then out to the backs who had decent hands. Burton struggled to budge Coventry at the breakdown though a combination of a some very street wise play by Coventry and a lack of understanding on how to combat this (the subject for Tuesday training session). Coventry scored after 5 minutes and went on the score sheet twice more in the half 0 V 17. Half time came and we tweaked a couple of things around the ruck and how we defended and the 2nd half became more of a even contest. Unfortunately Burton struggled to keep hold of the ball and couldn't string 2 or 3 passes together and Coventry went on to score 2 more try's, 1 a kick return from their own 22 and 1 an interception. Final score 0 V 31. On the plus side the line outs went well and the whole team (with 4 lady's in only their 2nd / 3rd game) kept at it for the whole game and never stopped running and tackling. I would like to think when we get our more experienced forwards back in harness and we win more ball for our backs then we might give Coventry a better game when we have the return fixture later in the season...…………….time will tell.
