We caught up with Neil Whitehead, Head Coach of Burton's U18 Girls...

A challenging season for the U18 girls, but still many positives and plenty to look forward to.

With no existing U18 girls beyond those graduating from U16, player numbers were always going to be low this season. However, clustering with Tamworth and Ashby, who were in a similar position, ensured that meaningful fixtures were available and the girls could continue their development.

Wins were difficult to come by, but performances were strong against single-club sides, and the girls also supported piloting a U18 inner warrior program. 2 victories were achieved throughout the year, but the girls played with heart and focus throughout, never letting their heads go down after any defeat.

4 girls represented Staffordshire in the U18 CB program, showing that even coming from a clustered side, they could still perform at a high level. Ultimately, the girls represented themselves and Burton admirably and have learnt as much about themselves and what they can achieve as young adults as they have about Rugby.

The crowning moment of the season was the girls as a group being awarded the Hannah Bladon Trophy for their demonstration of true rugby values.

Our massive thanks and recognition to the players and coaches at both Tamworth and Ashby for their support this year. Without all our clubs coming together, we would have struggled to offer the girls any rugby. It was the focus and desire of all involved to put club loyalties aside and keep players involved in the game that made for a successful season for the girls across all three Clubs.

Going forward, with the numbers in the younger age groups, the U18 should be in a much stronger position, and we are also looking forward to seeing the girls make their senior debuts in the near future and to developing a true pathway to our senior women’s team.
