U9 - we caught up with Head Coach Damon Varney...

What a fantastic season it has been for Burton Rugby Club U9.

This year marked an important milestone in the players' rugby journey as they took their first steps into contact rugby and learned the skills and responsibilities that come with tackling. The progress made by every player throughout the season has been remarkable.

From the very first training session to the Blast festival season finale, the players have grown in confidence, resilience and understanding of the game. Their tackling technique, decision-making, teamwork, and rugby knowledge have all developed significantly, and it's a real joy to watch.

The group has expanded throughout the year, with numbers now approaching 40 players. Allowing us to field 4 teams every week. This is a testament to the welcoming environment created by the team.

One of the standout successes of the season has been the continued growth of the girls' section within the squad. What began with a small number of players has grown into a group large enough to field its own team, a fantastic achievement. With the incredible support of Chris Ariss and Stu Hutton, we were also proud to host a girls-only rugby festival, providing a fantastic opportunity for players to develop their skills, build confidence and enjoy playing alongside other girls from across the region. It was a special day and an important step forward in growing the women's and girls' game at Burton Rugby Club, creating opportunities that will benefit players for many years to come.

We are very fortunate to have a great group of volunteers. Helping with setup, first aid, and coaching. They have brought energy, enthusiasm and expertise to every training session and match day. The coaches' commitment to developing each child, regardless of experience or ability, has created an environment where players feel supported, challenged and encouraged to improve.

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our parents and families, who have travelled far and wide, stood on muddy touchlines and supported the team every step of the way.

As we look ahead to next season, there is great excitement about what this group can achieve. The foundations have been built, the friendships are strong, and the future is very bright for the introduction of scrums, rucks and mauls!!

Well done to every player on an outstanding season. We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved.

A special thank you must also go to Thermclad, our fantastic kit sponsor. Their continued support has provided the team with high-quality kit and played an important role in helping the squad thrive. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do for the team.
