Sad News About Former Club Captain and President

Claire Bradley3 Nov 2019 - 19:55

It is with much sadness that the Club hears that William Souster has passed away.

He died on Monday 28th October following a short illness. He was 94 years old.

The Souster name has a very long association with Burton RFC and Bill Souster played a very active role for the Club over a number of years, achieving 329 1st XV appearances between 1945 and 1957, but also held a number of positions at Peel Croft. He was Club Captain from 1951 - 1953, then taking on the role of Hon.Secretary until 1976 and then Club President from 1974 - 1977. So it is no surprise to hear that he was finally made a Life Member of Burton RFC in 1977. Although Bill and his wife Norma moved away from the area in 2010, making their home in Devon, he still continued to support Burton and followed the results with much interest.

Taken from the Minutes of the Annual General Meeting Tuesday 15th June 1976
Mr L.C.Rees seconded a vote of thanks proposed by Mr V.N.Roebuck to retiring Hon.Secretary, Mr W.R.Sosuter, in his nine years of office he had coped with many unusual and demanding problems, including an England Final Trial and under whose secretaryship the reputation of the Club had been greatly enhanced. This was greeted by acclamation by the Meeting.

He went on to be President of Staffordshire Rugby Union from 1979 - 1981.

A minutes silence will be held in memory of this true Burton Rugby Clubman on Saturday 16th November before the 1st XV play Doncaster, kick off 2.15pm.

Bill's funeral service is to be held at the East Devon Crematorium, London Road, Strete Ralegh, Whimple, Exeter, EX5 2PT, on Friday, 8th November at 10 am. Family flowers only; donations in lieu of flowers to: Royal National Lifeboat Institution - Exmouth branch.
