Arthur Arrowsmith
Born 1890 – 10.05.1890
Service Number – 2/1385
Regiment – New Zealand Field Artillery
Rank – Gunner
Enlisted in the New Zealand Field Artillery, 4th Bn, on 6th February 1915
Described as 5’ 10”, 162lbs, Church of England
Sent to ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli on 8th July 1915
Died of Wounds aboard a Hospital Ship on 28th July 1915 aged 25.
His medals were sent to his parents at 458 Anglesey Road, he had 6 sisters and 4 brothers.
Son of Alfred and Jane Arrowsmith his occupation on enlistment was Clerk to Coal Merchants W Strange & Co, Burton.
Arthur was buried at sea but is commemorated on the Panel 72, Lone Pine Memorial, Canakkale, Turkey. The inscription reads -
“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives…
You are now living in the soil of a friendly country therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between The Johnnies and The Mehmet’s to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours…You, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears, your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."
