Two teams march on Tamworth

As promised Burton Under 9s were able to field two balanced teams for the festival , on a stunning day that provided us with perfect rugby conditions. First to take the field were Burton, playing their opening tie against Lichfield, and in truth Burton were caught a little cold. Despite some good tackling from Burton, they were unable to create many clear openings whereas Lichfield took their chances well, running out 15-0 winners.

The second Burton team, Saracens, were next to take the field, against festival hosts Tamworth. This was a much tighter game, with both teams holding the lead at different points in the match. Despite some excellent tackling from Simon, Sam and Alex, Tamworth scored twice in the final two minutes to run out 25-15 winners, with Simon, Dan and Matty all scoring well worked trys.

Burton’s second match brought a much more focussed and confident performance. Some excellent defending (Sam and Theo particularly) followed by pacy breaks with good supporting play saw Burton score three times without reply. To their credit Silhillians kept on coming and were rewarded with a score shortly after half time. But Burton, encouraged by their early success continued to dominate and a great run from Franklin sealed a 25-10 victory.

Saracens then took on the Silhillians, bouncing back from their earlier defeat with a convincing victory. Strong tackling again and from Saracens, and this time they were able to covert possession and opportunities into trys, winning 20-10 ultimately.

Burton’s 3rd tie, against Tamworth was a convincing victory for the hosts, Burton losing 25-5. Whilst Burton were always more competitive in this match than the score suggests, they were unable to keep Tamworth’s strong attacking play at bay despite producing some excellent passages of play themselves, one of which resulted in a try for Lewis.

Saracens penultimate encounter saw them come up against a well organised Lichfield team. This was a tight encounter in which the Saracens were narrowly beaten 10-0.

The two Burton teams contested the final match of a long and tiring day for the boys. In a good spirited match Burton edged out their teammates 15-5 with Theo, Sam and Matthew all impressing with good scores.

The whole Burton squad should be pleased and encouraged by the performances and results today. Fielding two highly competitive teams is a testament to the strength and depth of this group of players, well done everyone.
