Report from a match day parent

The team set off under sunny skies at Burton for the match at Leek to find the local micro climate providing dreary grey skies with occasional light showers.

Burton kicked off and Leek managed to keep possession for the first ten minutes, but good defensive work saw Leek being penned in their own half.  A series of penalties given away by Burton led to a Leek lineout five yards from the Burton line, a throw to the front of the line was well executed and Leek went over to score in the corner.  The difficult conversion was missed, Leek 5 Burton 0.

Following the restart excellent work from the Burton pack led to a scrum 5 metres from the Leek line, a pick up and drive saw No.8 Max Ordish going over for a try close to the posts.  This was followed by a successful conversion by Fly Half Andrew Barnett.  Leek 5 Burton 7.

Immediately from the restart a kick from Outside Centre Chris Brown was well chased and the defensive clearance was charged down by Inside Centre Lewis Williams who then showed good football skills to kick the ball on and score.  The conversion by Barnett was again successful.  Leek 5 Burton 14.

The final action of the half saw Burton dominating the play and a backs move saw Williams cutting back to set up a ruck under the Leek posts which was recycled well by the forwards and spread wide from Scrum Half Dale Potter for an easy try for Centre Brown, again converted by Barnett to give a half time score Leek 5 Burton 21.

The second half started with Burton again dominating the play with Leek seemingly happy to concentrate on a forward battle.  The pressure continued to mount on the Leek line until good work from Jacob Grimsdell in conjunction with Will Jay catching the Leek Full Back behind his line resulted in a 5 metre scrum from which Max Ordish drove over for his second try of the match.  A further conversion by Barnett took the score to Leek 5 Burton 28.

Moving towards the end of the game, a period of retained possession by the forwards and good handling by the backs enabled Williams to break through and pass to Ordish who scored his hat trick try under the posts.  Barnett kicked his fifth conversion of the game to give a final score Leek 5 Burton 35.

A special mention should go to the Burton line out with excellent work being done by Liam Grimsdell, Robert Ramsell and Andy Wood and their lifters to take a significant amount of Leek ball.

In an aftermatch interview forwards coach Andy Grimsdell in a rare moment of candour,  probably due to the bar being closed, said that the control shown by the team in the second half had been excellent.
