Burton Junior colts began their Staffs League campaign with victory at Longton 45 points to 12. The scoreline however impressive, belies the overall match performance that was laboured at times.
Burton started well and scored after two minutes with a break from first phase for Ben Grimsdell to touchdown. This failed to settle Burton down and the constant over commitment at the ruck and a failure to use pace out wide led to a very direct game which suited Longton.
Longton were a constant threat with the useful fly half and centre providing a poignant threat. When Burton did release the ball to the backs, a try by Sam Jordan-Turner put Burton further ahead. A further score for Burton was supplied by Daniel Toon as a defensive mix up in the Longton 22 was capitalised on.
Another break from a ruck led to Dale Potter touching down under the posts. Andrew Barnett converted 5 out of 7 conversions all match .
Longton did provide a score which they deserved for persistence.
Half Time 26-7
After half time a slight reorganisation of the team and Burton put the original game plan into action with the wingers and centres a more potent threat.
Jordan-Turner touched down again after some great phase work by the Burton forwards enabled space out wide for the backs.
The final two tries for Burton came from the front row with them using their greater fitness and power with first Matt Williams and the last try by hooker Macaulay Ward.
Sandwiched in between this Longton scored a deserved try with them camped on the Burton line for 10 minutes.
Overall the match was well received by the large crowd gathered, and special mention to the referee who stepped in at the last minute. Burton will have to improve for the challenges ahead over the coming months.
Work at training is imperative and the rewards will come.
