Burton under 17’s v Wolverhampton 23rd January 2011
Burton travelled to Wolverhampton for what was always likely to be a challenging competition fixture. The home side displayed their intent in the first minute when they collected the Burton kick and scored and converted a try. The quality of Wolves attacking rugby was reflected in a further three tries, leaving Burton trailing 28:0 after fifteen minutes. The quality of their opposition forced Burton to play on the edge when in possession whilst the pace of the Wolverhampton attack relentlessly exposed the Burton defence.
As the first half continued, Burton were facing the prospect of telephone numbers. The fact that this did not arise, the eventual score being 48:0, was in large degree attributable to a wonderful display of last gasp tackling by full back Tom Hunt. Time and again he stopped the Wolves attack in its tracks with precisely executed tackles which drew recognition from his opponents and their supporters. Their were other brighter moments and a number of players put in strong performances, not least forwards Halton, Champney and Will Turner, whilst replacement scrum-half Tom Bunting was involved in some promising moves down the flanks towards the end. Ultimately however the strength and cohesion of Wolverhampton in all departments were too much for the travellers.
