MATCH REPORT

After an opening win in the league a fortnight ago, Burton looked to continue their winning sequence against Longton RFC.

Burton started proceedings by kicking off into the cold & wet sky. The chase was good & Longton were pinned into their half immediately. Some fierce rucking from Longton ensure that they maintained possession but with Joe Mycock snapping around the breakdown, he ensured terror was not gained. Ben Higginson was also putting in a good shift by getting himself around the field.

On 3 mins, the visitor’s broke down field but Adam Dolman managed to scramble to the ball. It was recycled & Taylor Millington put in a monsterous kick downfield worthy of any international fly-half, to take burton from their 22 to within 10 metres of the Longton line. From the resulting lineout, Max Williams took it against the head & moved the ball left. Longton infringed by coming in from the side that led to a Burton penalty. Sam Valentine slotted his kick straight through the posts to give the hosts the lead.

Longton came straight back but Curtis Marshall was on good form defensively. Max Mckendrick was again proving his worth by leading from the front by getting to every break down first. Ryan Welsford went on a booming run, breaking tackles before being dragged down resulting in another penalty. Valentine’s kick hit the post & rebounded into play.

Longton struggled to get out of their half & Sheridan Cole stole in off the wing to drive in to within 10 but poor handling in the ruck meant momentum was lost. Burton’s tempo dropped & too many times Longton were quicker to react. George Roden directed his back line but the first half fizzled out with Burton leading 3 – 0.

The 2nd begun with some positive words ringing in their ears & debutant Lucas Witts coming into the fray. After 37 mins, Millington kicked the ball down field, Valentine followed up with a great tackle, Pickett took on the loose ball before off loading to Ryan Sharp who ran in to score the first try of the day. Valentine slotted his conversion straight through the uprights.

Burton were now on the rampage & it was one way traffic. Lewis Mason was having a traffic game at full game catching every high ball & constantly running it back. Mason made yards before Valentine took it on with a magnificent step & jinx over the line for a great solo try. Valentine missed his conversion.

Lewis Sturgess was again having a great game. The visitor’s couldn’t live with his power or pace as he went on another barn storming run. Burton were again pressing ahead when Mason got what his performance deserved. He popped up in the middle & stepped left, then right before slidding over in the wet conditions for another great solo try. Valentine was successful with his conversion to extend the lead further.

Longton were taking play to Burton & had opportunities to score themselves. They kicked to ball down field but debutant Daniel Mosey was on hand to touch the ball down in the dead ball line to ensure his side kept a clean sheet. When the visitor’s tried to break away from their 22, on 50 mins, Pickett intercepted a pass & ran in an opportunists try under the posts. Valentine slotted the extras.

The final 15 mins were a sloppy affair with many infringements by both sides. In truth many facets of the game require some work & the game fizzled out by the final whistle to leave the scores Burton 29 – 0 Longton

BURTON 29 (Tries :Sharp, Valentine, Mason, Pickett, Con: Valentine 3, Pen :Valentine)

A hard fought victory & a special mention goes to man of the match Lewis Mason whom was sheer class in wet & slippy conditions.

A special mention also goes to Alex Finney, Josh Shaw, Will Spray & Ben Whitehouse whom all came to support their team mates whilst carrying injuries. Well done lads!
