A well drilled and sizeable Doncaster side visited Burton on Sunday and blitzed the first half.

Burton were playing against a much bigger pack, in fact Tom Langley’s opposite number at prop was 20 stone, Langley did a sound job and matched him in the scrum. Doncaster soon took the lead when their full back avoided some attempted tackles and ran 70 meters for a fine try. Good tackling by Sam Turner and Chris Brown and a string of surging runs by Sam Wardega were keeping Burton in the game and the Burton forwards were competing really well especially at the breakdown. Adam Cooke and Sam Turner counter attacked well but Doncaster soon scored two more tries, one by a solid winger who is usually a prop, he brushed past two tacklers and ran in from inside his own half. The Burton backs had little space but ran whenever possible. Ben Shaw in his first game of the season tackled well and had a couple of good runs. Ian Evans played superbly making numerous tackles and surging runs throughout the game.
Burton were losing 26 – 0 at half time after a fourth try by Doncaster, and were soon defending their try line with a series of scrums and penalties and managed to keep Doncaster out. Chris Sammons went on at hooker and took three strikes against the head. Ross Burrows also had a fine game, using the ball well, making the yards and put in some solid tackles. Tom Hunt was also tackling well. Burton were actually putting Doncaster under pressure and Sam Turner intercepted the ball and sprinted over from 20 meters for a try which he converted. Doncaster soon scored another try. Burton were getting stronger, Jack Champney was leading from the front, never taking a backward step. Wardega went on another powerful run making 30metres, them after more Burton pressure Brown took the ball and beat several players to score a well deserved second try for Burton, making the final score a 31 – 12 win to Doncaster. Burton had competed really well and amazingly outscored Doncaster in the second half.
