Burton handled the tricky conditions and ball better than opponents to win hard fought game 10-29.

Derby 10 (10 Burton 29 (17)

Tries: Josh Hart 3, Oliver Corbett, Harry Grice

Cons: Oliver Corbett 2

The game started with Burton playing into a strong wind that demanded accurate passing and concentration. Both teams struggled initially as forward possession was followed by turn over once with the backs. Early indications also suggested that Derby were a good forward outfit and very strong in the scrum. Derby were the first to put phases together and it took a great piece of tidying from Ben Curl to thwart what looked like a certain try. Eventually Burton got some possession from a disrupted scrum and Charlie Newcombe picked up loose ball to make ground. Good rucking from Jack Wardle and James North made space for Josh Hart to burst through the Derby line to score his first try in the corner. The next Burton possession saw more good work from Ben Curl as he made a determined straight run to clear the Burton line. From this Josh Hart was able to pick up the ball on the half way and break through the defensive cover with a series of side steps and great speed to score under the posts. However, Burton seemed to relax and a couple of missed tackles later were punished by a good try from the Derby forwards. Burton were able to extend the lead when a strong scum allowed James North to carry the ball to the Derby try line to set it up for Oliver Corbett to finish with good determination. Derby replied just before half time with a good passing move via the backs to score in the corner. Half time Burton led 17-10.

The second half was a controlled performance by Burton as they began to dominate the ruck and break down ball. Morgan Brown carried the ball forward and set up Calum Launchbury to make more ground supported by Tommy Collingwood and James North. The ball was set up for Oliver Corbett to feed Harry Grice to score under the posts. The next try came from a better scrum from Burton and good work from Edward Baxter, Joel Dolman and William Hulbert to carry the momentum into the Derby half. The ball was passed back to Daniel Grimsdell who burst through several tackles to set Josh Hart up for his hat trick try under the posts. Oliver Corbett converted the try to finish the scoring. The final score Derby10 Burton 29.
