Great start to 2011 as a hungry U13's squad blow cobwebs away with a resounding win away at Ashfield RFC.

Written by Rich Morris as both Owen & Perry were away.
With Burton U13s not having played for 6 weeks – due to weather and the holiday season – a superb turnout of players and parents alike at Ashfield RUFC, Notts, on a deceptively cold day had us all hoping we could re-ignite the progress made so far this season.

The Burton forwards took a few minutes to remind themselves of the correct body positions at the breakdown. And after 5 minutes quick ball from the forwards, resulted in the ball being shipped along the line with Ed Turner stepping inside to finish off a good move. Danny Causer converting to put us 7-0 ahead.

After 10 minutes further good running with ball in hand from Ed Turner, resulted in James Rowland finishing well to put the Crofters 12-0 up. With most of the game taking place in the Ashfield half, a scrum 5 yards out saw Oli Mears at scrum half taking from the base and touching down in a well exected try. 17-0.

A short delay on 20 minutes with one of the Ashfield players leaving the field with a shoulder/collar bone injury – we hope he’s okay. 2 minutes later typical and powerful running from Joe Gorman from outside the oppositions 22, broke several ‘challenges’ to score for 22-0.

Immediately from the restart, great fielding from Ed Turner who then gained a lot of ground before being tackled. In excellent flanker fashion, Sam Walton was first to the breakdown, spotted the opportunity with a pick and go, and scored down the left. 27-0.

Just before half time the move of the game. A scrum 5 yards from our own try line, after some Ashfield pressure forced Sam Walton to carry over his own line. From the resulting excellent scrum from Burton, some great interplay between forwards and backs, Callum Shaw straightened up the line and put in a great pass, which Joe Epicheff finished with determined running from half way down the left. Great try Joe ! 34-0 with the conversion too.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Burton dominating, but Ashfield never gave up and huge credit to them for that. 5 minutes into the second half Danny Causer got over in the corner after some great forward pressure. After a further 5 minutes, Oli Mears got his second of the day from the right wing, using his superb pace to finish neatly. 44-0.

To match Oli’s brace, James Rowland was not to be outdone after some neat passing in midfield. Danny Causer converting for a 51-0 lead. And to finish the scoring Jeri Oldfield powered over from close range after sustained forward pressure. 56-0.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing of the day was how well all the boys played as a team throughout. Some in different and unfamiliar positions. Certainly augurs well for the upcoming top of the table League fixture against Tamworth next Sunday. Well done boys !

And well done to Coaches Pete, Derek and Chris, marshalling the ship with Perry on the Lemsip and Owen on something much stronger.
