It was a day of first’s for Burton RFC U13’s today. Our first game on the Tatenhill site coincided with our first ever competitive match in the ‘Staffordshire Waterfall Cup’.
An early start due to England’s first appearance in the RWC saw both sides begin the game brightly with Stafford opening the scoring with a great individual try, this was replied to a few moments later with a fantastic team try from Burton, finished off by the outstanding Alexander Cheeseman. Burton’s focus for the game was ball retention and rucking over, this area of their game was vastly improved on from the previous week and if they continue to improve at this rate through the season we will have one hell of a team come Christmas.
An outstanding and experienced Stafford team score a few more try’s before Joseph Cox replied with a fine run and finish.
Early in the 2nd half Stafford’s lead stretched to 10 tries so the referee stopped the game and the result was finalised before getting to full time in line with RFU regulations.
With agreement from both sides the Stafford team withdrew their stronger players and replaced them with new players in support of ‘kids first’ rugby. The next 10 mins were played out with uncontested srums which produced a much more balanced game.
Fantastic support from the U13s families as always, thank you!
