U13's Crofters dominate County Pool with another convincing win.

Peel Croft sees a real treat
Burton RFC U13s 36 v 5 Tamworth RUFC U13s

Burton U13s hosted Tamworth on Sunday on the Croft on this keenly fought top of the table clash in Pool 1 of the Staffordshire Under 13s League.

If this is the effect on all the Burton squad, in having the pleasure and privelege of playing on an albeit muddy Peel Croft, then we really must do this more often. Parents, family friends & supporters gave both squads a great reception as they ran from the tunnel onto the pitch, and by the end they very much deserved it.

Burton got off to a flyer and after only 1 minute of play, some good rucking, quick ball and tidy hands, George Poutney made a good break from outside centre, putting Levi ‘the-lean-mean-try-scroring-machine’ Davis to finish with pace in the right corner. 5-0.

Neither side were giving an inch as the contest was played at what seemed like 100 mile an hour. Burton were solid defensively and working very hard at the breakdown, against a bigger pack who had the upper hand in the scrum pretty much all day.

After 15 minutes on the clock, concerted pressure by Burton, with phase after phase saw Hugo McGhee get over from close range, with help – as it should be – from supporting teammates. Callum Broderick converted to make the score 12-0.

After 20 minutes saw a superb play from Burton. An exceptionally worked tap penalty, where the pods were organised, the ball was quick and the runners perfectly timed, saw quick hands out to the left and Oli Mears was held up just short on the left. Calm down Penny, clam down.

Just before the break. A scrum 5 metres from the Tamworth line was won, quick bal from the base, quick hands to George Poutney at outside centre, who sold not one but two dummies for a brilliant on the left. Callum Broderick converted to make the score 19-0 at the interval.

Now we could all catch our breath.

The second period saw a number of changes in personnel – how lucky we are with such strength in depth. 3 minutes on, some great rucking by the fresh forwards, again quick ball delivered from Charlie Bunting, great hands along the line, straight running from George Poutney puts Oli Mears in the left corner for an absolutely fantastic try, played at such pace. His Mum had to be restrained from entering the playing area, due to such excitement. 24-0.

On 6 minutes a lost scrum on half way, but great pressure from our defensive line, we stole the ball. A good break from Charlie Bunting, nice hands to George Poutney who finishes with incisive running under the posts. Callum Broderick converts for a 31-0.

On 10 minutes a deserved try for our Visitors. Tamworth gained some momentum and a break down their right saw their winger over. An illegal holding up from Levi Davis – covering from his own right wing berth, saw a penalty try awarded. 31-5.

On 20 minutes saw a great move from a tap penalty. Pods – sorted. Communication – sorted. Quick ball – sorted. Great support running – sorted. Quick hands – done. George Poutney – over on the left for a superb hat trick – thank you very much ! 36-5

A minute later and more good play from the Burton Boys. A great chase from Ben Mason at full back put his counterpart under enormous pressure. Again good at the breakdown and quick ball to the left, sadly saw Will Beardsmore held up.

All in all a good day for the Burton Under 13s, who were deservedly clapped and cheered from the pitch. So many positives. Levi Davis was outstanding in attack and defence, getting some special treatment, and great in the tackle. Joe Gorman appeared to be everywhere, making break after break, supporting all the time. Charlie Bunting linked the forwards and backs nicely, with good clean, quick ball. The forwards to a man worked tirelessly to give the team that clean, quick ball – all eleven of them. George Poutney was excellent at 13, simply excellent. Oli Mears always a threat, tackling way above his size. James Rowland and Ben Mason at full back – save as houses and dangerous going forward.

Well done boys, a great TEAM performance again. All the hard work in training by yourselves and the Coaches is certainly paying off, with more to come in the weeks ahead. After today’s results, that sees us at the top of our pool by 3 points with one game to play – Away to Linley & Kidsgrove next Sunday.
