BURTON TRIUMPH OVER STRONG STAFFORD SIDE

As the under 13's squad travelled away this week to last years county finalists they knew they were in for a competitive mornings rugby. Within the changing room the atmosphere was excited but focused, each player understanding what was expected from their performance. After an excellent warm up, Burton were ready to start led by this mornings captain Joe Gorman.

The game kicked off and from the start Burton went on the front foot controlling the scrums and breakdowns against a much larger pack. Throughout the half Burton dominated possession and territory resulting in the ball being won by the excellent Burton scrum who performed at a high level all morning. Burton were then put under pressure by Stafford as our attacking backs were again looking for holes in the defence. This pressure resulted in the Stafford centre collecting the ball and running from his own half to score under the post. Burton were not to let this affect their high quality of rugby and in determined mood were keen to start the game. The kick off forced Stafford back into their half and the pressure from Burton continued. This pressure which was created from phase after phase of good possession weakened the Stafford defence to enable Callum Broderick to force his way over the line to top off an excellent passage of play. Stafford's only venture into the Burton half caused Burton to be 7-5 down at the break.

The game from the restart then see-sawed and in a high standard match, both teams played some excellent rugby. In this tight game strong mental attitude would have a big effect on the result and putting in the extra effort would make all the difference. The match moved into the latter stages of the second half with Burton putting on the pressure recycling some great phase ball and probing the Stafford defence, this pressure resulted in Callum Broderick scoring his second try with a strong run carrying over two defenders to score. The conversion was then neatly slotted by Joe Gorman to make the score 7-12 with minutes to go.

Stafford wasted no time in restarting and came at Burton guns blazing, but with great defence and a never say die attitude Burton held on for what was a well earned victory.

It was clear to see at the final whistle that Burton knew they had been in a tough game but this only added to the enjoyment of their achievement.

Final score 7-13
