Burton U13's travelled across to Wolves RFC for their first County League match of the season. Despite extreme weather conditions they won 17-10.

On an extremely wet and windy morning we drove a long way across the Midlands to play our first County game against a very strong and well prepared Wolverhampton RFC.
Wolves have had a few new players turn up this season to bolster their already strong squad so we knew we were going to be in for a tough call, and the dirty weather was not going to help.

With me forgetting to pick up James Rowland (sorry James & cheers Steve Brodders for doing a u-turn!) and Perry getting lost in the Black Country, we were late on arrival, however we soon changed and the ‘buzz’ in the changing rooms was electric! Everyone was focused, and ready for a tough game, the weather despite peeing down did not dampen our determination and a fully psyched Burton squad ran out to deal with a tough job in-hand.

From the kick off we set the pace and immediately took control, as of previous games we were competitive at the breakdown and won good ball for our backs to use and gain territory. Despite a very slippy surface for both boots and ball we had good hands and strong running and ball after ball went whizzing down the line as we advanced up the Wolves pitch.
Finally after good work by the forwards and two phases of play that sucked many Wolves players in, we shipped the ball wide for Austin to sprint down the touchline and score in the corner. Finally we were playing our game!
Fast ball out through the backs continued and again despite sticky ground and slippy ball we repeated our game and Austin romped in another great try touching down in fine style.
However our opposition were no mugs and our confidence lead to us taking our foot off the gas, Wolves took their chances and suddenly there rucking was better than ours and phase after phase was won by the opposition resulting in a well worked try by them. Half time score 10-5 with everything to play for!

The second half started well with both teams on an equal footing, a great game was being had by all and the downpour got heavier. Monsoon season was upon us!
Again both teams did their best under the extreme conditions and a well won ball by the Crofters was passed at speed down to Levi on the right wing, just as we have practised for the past few months, a nice side step left one black shirt grasping for air but he still had two players to beat!... a cheeky chip over the heads and a strong run to touch down our third try, one that even Leicester Tigers would have been happy with. Danny slotted it between the posts to make it 17-10.

Despite this Wolverhampton never gave in and battled on until the final whistle, constantly testing our defence and pressuring everyone in a white shirt. It was a tough battle but we came through it with flying colours. Well done to all!
