Burton/Barton v Leek

Burton / Barton’s first fixture of the season was an away trip to Leek, never an easy game, but harder as we travelled with only 13 players. This would count against us against Leek’s squad of over 20 players.
The game started well for BB but unfortunately following some missed tackles the Leek backs broke through to score the first try of the game which was converted. Leek went on to score another 3 tries and convert 2 of them. Burton replied with Ollie Gibbs taking a penalty kick. Half time score 26 to 3.
The BB boys started the second half very positively and a good break and a clean pair of heels from Jack Shorten ensured a BB try. The possession was pretty evenly shared, however Leek had the upper hand in the finishing department and went on to score a further two more tries and convert both.
The final score Leek 40 and Burton/Barton 8.
Lots to work on in training, both in attack and defence, moving the ball quicker and attacking space not looking for contact. More organisation and talking in defence as despite a few good individual tackles the ball wasn’t turned over enough.
The 13 lads that played should still be proud, they worked well as a team and there were some good periods of play. Burton/Barton won most of their line outs and were strong in the scrums. With a full squad of Burton/Barton boys there will be some exciting games to watch as the season progresses.
