Burton U13s have their first win of the season!

A warm day welcomed the home side to the Oxhay this Sunday morning, with the boys being edgy, following on from three defeats so far in all competitions. A change could be sensed in the team, following from some strategic decisions by the coaches to move players to different positions and try something new for them.

The effects were immediately visible with there being a fresher perspective and Burton was on the attack from the kick-off. The assault on Wolverhampton’s half meant that within the first five minutes, Travis Day had run in the first try, only for the conversion to go awry.

Wolverhampton tried to make some ground following the start, but Burton were still fired up and in the twelfth minute, Samuel Thorpe ran in a second try, this time the conversion from Travis Day stuck and the boys were fired up.

The away team fought back twice to bring the scores closer a couple of times, but some great tackling and intervention from forwards and backs alike meant that we held a slender lead

Following on from this, after twenty-five minutes, man-of-the-match George Abel finally ran in a try after getting several probing runs stopped by the opposition deep in their half. Again, Travis Day successfully converted to take the score to 19-10 to Burton at half-time.

The Wolverhampton coach must have lit a fire in the visitors’ belly, because from kick-off, they were right in the home sides face and pushing to score again and make something of the match. However, from open play, Jacob Ruprecht stormed through five minutes after the restart for Burton to put down a fourth try, but the conversion was unsuccessful this time.

This seemed to be the catalyst for Wolverhampton to stage a late comeback, with a try being run in, with one conversion for them, coming almost right on the last whistle, after a tough battle being fought on the Burton try-line.

So, heads held high, Burton have their first win in the league and at last the positives they are getting out of training are finally getting the results, this time a 24-17 victory.
