Burton U13’s had a tough battle on their hands today against Stoke. Some may say that Burton lost the match but we prefer to say that Stoke played a slightly better game.

The match started off with Burton’s Niall Collett kicking off... Stoke gather the ball and with some fantastic passing out to the wing run the ball over for their 1st try. This was converted leaving the score at Burton 0 Stoke 7. Play continues and with a few counter rucking movements Stoke gain possession and run the ball over Burtons line for their 2nd try which again is converted, taking the score to Burton 0 Stoke 14. Play again resumes but Stoke seem to be in the right place at the wrong time for Burton as they again gather the ball and make a dash for the line... Over they go for their 3rd try but they are this time unable to convert. The score now Burton 0 Stoke 19.

Burton don’t despair and with their heads held high, they go into the 1st scrum of the match with grunting determination and the sheer power of the forwards push Stoke back almost 8 feet to come out triumphant with the ball. The ball is shipped out to Will Bower who makes a massive dash for the try line. He ships the ball out to Burton’s Jack Johnson who is bundled into touch. Stoke win the line out but are penalised for tackling offside, 2nd scrum and again the mighty forwards push Stoke clean off the ball. The ball is shipped out to Millar Pride, who with quick hands ships it to George Else who again with lightening hands ships it to Zak Fellows who runs the ball over the try line for Burtons 1st try of the match. Will Bower who converts the ball taking the care to Burton 7 Stoke 19. With the match in full flow Burton are holding their own, ball gets shipped out to Declan Bristow who runs through the middle of the stoke team but is dragged down to ground. Stoke gather the ball and run it over Burton’s line for another try. This remains unconverted but takes the score at half time to Burton 7 Stoke 24.

The 2nd half and the Burton pack look determined to balance the match. Stoke kick off and fumble the ball. Burton soon snap it up as Harry Roden pounces to secure the loose ball. Stoke are penalised for tackling in from the side giving a scrum down to Burton who again push Stoke clean off the ball. Burton were unfortunately unable to capitalise on this and allowed Stoke to run in a further 2 tries in quick succession. Neither are converted, the score now Burton 7 Stoke 34. Burton are fighting for the ball with some heavy tackles being made and some fantastic rucking and counter rucking. Burton’s man mountain Ben Acton ran through Stokes defence, shipping the ball out to Connor Hutchinson who is tackled 1m short of the try line. The ball is scooped up and shipped out to Jack Johnson who went over the line for the final try of the match. Unfortunately with the wind denied the conversion leaving the final score Burton 12 Stoke 34.

Overall a fantastic effort by the Burton lads well done and congratulations for keeping your heads up and playing a fair game, Burton overall won the 12 out of 12 scrums and won 3 out of 4 line outs.
